Classification by Riding Purpose
- Road Bicycles: Specifically designed for road riding, they pursue speed. The frames are mostly in a diamond shape, and the materials are often lightweight ones such as carbon fiber and aluminum alloy. The tires are narrow to reduce rolling resistance. The handlebars are designed ergonomically, and the shifting system is precise, making them suitable for fast riding on smooth roads.
- Mountain Bicycles: Used for off-road riding, they can adapt to rugged mountain road conditions. They are equipped with wide tires and deep patterns, which have strong grip. The frames are sturdy, and they have a front fork suspension and rear shock absorption system. The shifting system can handle different slopes and complex terrains.
- Touring Bicycles: Designed for long-distance travel, the frames and saddles are designed to be wide and comfortable. There are many extended accessories, such as front and rear racks, fenders, and luggage cases, which can carry a large amount of luggage and are suitable for long-time riding and carrying equipment.
- City Bicycles: Suitable for urban commuting and leisure riding, they focus on comfort and convenience. The riding posture is relatively upright, and the handlebars are wider for easy control. Some are equipped with an internal shifting system, which is simple to maintain. They may also be equipped with accessories such as fenders and baskets.
Classification by Functional Features
- Folding Bicycles: Their most prominent feature is that they can be easily folded, making them convenient to carry and store. They are suitable for short trips in the city and can be taken on public transportation or placed in the trunk of a car.
- Gear-Shifting Bicycles: Equipped with a transmission system, they can adjust the gears according to road conditions and riding needs. There are external and internal shifting systems. External shifting is commonly seen in road bicycles and mountain bicycles, while internal shifting is mostly applied to city bicycles and some leisure bicycles.
- Electric Bicycles: Equipped with a battery and motor system, they can assist in riding through electricity, reducing physical exertion and increasing the cruising range. They are suitable for long-distance commuting or riding. There are two types: electric bicycles and electric-assisted bicycles. In the latter type, the motor cannot drive alone and only assists pedaling.
- Fixed Gear Bicycles: They do not have a brake and shifting device. The flywheel is fixed to the rear wheel, and the rider controls the rotation of the wheel and braking through pedaling. They have a simple structure and require high skills and balance ability. They are often used for track performances and urban street riding.
Classification by Special Purpose
- Racing Bicycles: Used for professional competitions, they are divided into track racing bicycles and road racing bicycles. They have extremely high requirements for frame strength, weight, aerodynamic performance, etc., and are usually manufactured using the most advanced materials and technologies.
- Children's Bicycles: Specifically designed for children, the size and weight are suitable for the physical development characteristics of children. They have a lower body, handlebars, pedals, and saddles suitable for children, helping children exercise their balance ability and physical coordination ability.
- Trials Bicycles: They are extreme sports bicycles used for climbing obstacles and are divided into different size models such as large and small ones. Riders are required to have excellent balance ability, explosive power, and skills.
- Recumbent Bicycles: The rider lies on the saddle in a supine position and controls the direction with a vertically gripped handlebar. They have good comfort and a unique riding experience, and are suitable for people who pursue individuality and have high requirements for riding comfort.
